Age Strong Town Meetings

I held one of our great “Together” MYsocial Zoom discussions on this subject, and managed to do a really bad job of it. It’s probably going to be good and important – my mistake was not being clear about it. So, trying to do better and in case you’re interested in joining us:

Age UK Lambeth is developing an approach we call “Age Strong” (suggestions for the logo and t-shirt welcomed). The idea is that we older people are a huge resource for increasing our own wellbeing – and that of the community. Age Strong begins with programmes to make us full partners in developing and delivering support and services we and the whole community need. The programmes in which we elders can have real impact, and not just be “consulted”, mostly include opportunities to become a Mentor on a subject helping others to do well with it. There will be consulting as well of course, good so that major partners get a better understanding of where we’re coming from, but the focus is us older people delivering, not just receiving. Current subjects include:

  • Preventing Frailty
  • First Aid and self help
  • Second Aid (wellbeing mentors)
  • Physical activity
  • Work

The idea of the Town Meeting is to get people 50+ (no upper age limit) together with major partners in these areas and discover how to make the most out of working together. Meetings will be online until there’s a vaccine or treatment making the ‘Town Meeting at the Town Hall’ kind of thing safe.

Simple. You wouldn’t think I could mess up introducing that, but it’s amazing what I can do. If you like it, watch MYsocial for what happens next. If you want to join our weekly “Together” Zoom meetings they’re on Wednesdays at 2pm and the link to them is  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/88454683558
